Hoop-la! Hurrah! 1982
Showing a direct lineage to the iconic ‘Pseudosynthesis’ of 1976, this major work evolves Elliott’s radical new use of colour. The artist mixed each colour precisely to both contrast and harmonise simultaneously, with an extremely aesthetic result. The tonality was further enhanced by shooting on a 6cm x 4.5cm camera.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about this piece is that 30 years on it still looks up-to-the-minute. Timelessness is undoubtedly the litmus test of all great art. The picture is also chronologically important, as later in 1982 Elliott changed the way he used colour completely, abandoning these polychromatic palettes for his trademark, reds, purples and blues. Often using just a splash of colour on otherwise monochromatic scenarios.
The image is a celebration of colour and radiates a sense of fun. Perhaps a welcome respite from the heavyweight, deep and dark imagery found at the other end of Elliott’s unparalleled arc of diversity. Unsurprisingly, the piece enjoys great popularity.
