'Spilt' of 1975 is a diminutive masterpiece for Elliott, being only around 12 inches high, but it remains eternally and disproportionally popular. Elliott's ability to finely balance the abstract and the figurative is unrivalled. It shares many qualities with magnum opus 'Pseudosynthesis' of 1976' . The use of block colour used with huge confidence and the synthesised bottle are both precursors of colours, contrasts and shapes to come. This colouration was hugely influential on the 1970s. So it is an important piece in the canon. It has to be observed that even at this early stage Elliott was creating every square millimetre of the frame, like an artist sculpting and painting his art into physicality.
